The sheer number of jobs that would be created would bring us out of our recession in less than 3 years if we did this.
But of course, automobile lobbyists would have an aneurysm…
I saw a really interesting documentary on PBS a while back about this, it’s killing me because I can’t remember what it was called, but it went in depth into how the auto industry conspired to kill passenger rail and public transport in general in the US back in the ’50s. It also featured several metro areas such as Denver and the fight over an interstate extension there. I really wish I could remember the name of it because it really broke down the fuckery that took place and how it’s contributed to suburban sprawl, etc.
The horrible thing? We were trying to do that. Particularly Ohio. But then we got this governor who doesn’t quite get that you know, poor people live here. He canned the project and REFUSED MONEY FROM THE NATIONAL GOVERNMENT for said project.
So yeah, no trains for Ohio.
